SEO or search engine optimization is necessary to help you promote your business online. So what the heck is it?
The internet has empowered people to make better choices. We have all the information we need to make informed choices in how we spend our time and our money. Everything is connected and technology makes our lives more convenient and our experience can be customized to our unique needs. Using specific keyword phrases, you can help your ideal clients find your services.
So just pause with me for a minute and imagine that you are making travel arrangements for an upcoming trip. It is going to be busy, and you would prefer to take some time to yourself for a brief outing, but don't know which sites to see.
Sitting down to review your plans, you realize you have a block of time open that you would like to spend site-seeing. You recall a friend post about their vacation experience in the same area a few days ago so you go back to their Facebook page and read the conversation then send them a FB private message asking for the name of that restaurant they liked. Next, you start researching other Points of Interest (POI's) on your electronic device. Your friend has similar tastes, but you want to know what other people are saying about "Fun Things To Do" in the area. You look up locations on a map, check their distances from your hotel, then read reviews on a few travel websites to see what would be a good fit for your timeframe and budget. Finally, you decide on a local recreation area, visiting their website to purchase your tickets online. You know there are some interesting things in the surrounding area, but should you buy a guided tour? You lookup information about their guided tours and happily discover that "there's an app for that." You download their free app to your smartphone so you can take their self-guided tour through the recreation area when you arrive.
Modern consumers are engaged. Modern consumers are informed. So you'd better be knowledgable about your business and strive for continued excellence in your field. Even before they have seen your logo, your ad, your newsletter, people have already researched reviews of you and your competitors as easy as a swipe of their finger. In fact, a study found that the more expensive a product or service is, the more pieces of information a person will gather before making their decision.
By optimizing your content online, you will be able to cohesively tell your story across multiple social media platforms, blogs and through your website, getting better results to your target audience.
I’m all about giving you actionable steps that you can take right now to help grow your business, so here we go:
sign up for a Google Adwords account. Once you do this, you will have access to their keyword planner tool and you can test and compare your results against benchmark businesses that are similar to yours.
Assignment; Choose about 10 keyword phrases you'd like to rank for on Google. The goal is to choose keyword phrases that are very specific so they have little competition. Using a general word such as "attorney" is not specific enough, for example, because there are a lot of other websites trying to rank for "attorney." You will want to focus on ranking on the first page of Google for your local city first, then you can expand your region. Be very specific in your keyword phrases. Run them through the AdWords keyword planner
to see if people are actually typing those keywords into Google's search engine. Does the keyword planner suggest other variations of the keyword phrase that you chose? Are there a lot of competitors in your area trying to rank on the first page of Google for the same keywords? There are alternative keyword phrases suggested by the Google Keyword Planner tool as well. While Google’s Keyword Planner Tool is not precise, it is just one way to help you understand what the most popular search phrases might be. There are many other free and paid keyword planner tools available as well.
Now that you've identified your best keyword phrases to focus on, you've go to use them in every piece of advertising collateral that you create: blogs, newsletters, website, landing pages, FB ads, Google AdWord campaigns, Twitter cards,YouTube descriptions, press releases, interviews, articles, videos, etc. We use a spreadsheet to help keep track of our keyword phrases to understand which ones perform best.
analyze, rinse, repeat. Keep re-evaluating your process every 3 months to determine which keyword phrases work best with your target audience.
